Highlights

Like all other sports in the country Golf Fiji tournament schedule was adversely affected due to COVID19lock down in the early part of last year. Some of the bigger Clubs like Natadola, Denarau and Fiji Golf Club were very badly hit economically.

However, with the relaxation of the COVID19 Protocols we were able to hold the following major tournaments.

27 September, East vsWest -  This event was revived after a lapse of some years and proved to be very popular and successful.  Our gratitude to our host Lautoka Golf Club for hosting the event. The Tournament was played in three grades, A, B and C as well as the Ladies. Once again the West team proved too strong for the golfers from the East.

22-23 August, FijiAmateur Championships, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club.  A total of 49golfers took part which included 7 Ladies.  Abid Hussain of Nadi Airport Golf Club who was the 54 holes Gross Winner on a score of 225; and Abhyas Chand of Fiji Golf ClubSuva who was the 54 holes Nett winner. Raina Kumar of Denarau Golf Club was the winner of Ladies 36 holes on a net score of 141. Disappointingly, the Juniors component of the Championships had to be cancelled due to lack of entries.

To encourage juniors golf development and participation in National events Golf Fiji has decided to waive entry fees for the Juniors participating in any Junior event organised by Golf Fiji.

31 October, 1-2November, Digicel Fiji Open Golf 50th Anniversary Championships, Fiji Golf Club. His Excellency the President ofFiji was the Chief Guest at the 50th Anniversary Dinner.  Over 100 golfers from around the country participated in the event. Unfortunately, due to COVID19 travel restrictions no overseas golfers were able to take part.

The winners for 2020 Championships were:

  • 2020 Fiji OpenWinner:  Local Professional Sam Lee of Denarau Golf Club Nadi
  • 2020 Ladies Fiji Open Winner: Dawi Jee of Fiji Golf Club Suva
  • 2020 Junior Fiji Open Winner: Inaugural winner: Shakeel Pillai of Lautoka Golf Club
  • 2020 Fiji Open Amateur Champion: Abid Hussain of Nadi Airport Golf Club.

27 November, WesternOpen Amateur Championships, Natadola Bay Golf Club - A 27 hole competition with about 50 golfers taking part. Abid Hussain was crowned the 2020 Western Champion.

Eastern Open Championships: Unfortunately this tournament had to be postponed.

All District Open Tournaments will be Golf Fiji sanctioned Tournaments but will be left to the District Clubs to organize.

District Open Championships:  Despite the very many constraints all the Clubs were able to very successfully organize their respective District Championships. We congratulate all the winners.

On behalf of the Golf Fiji Executive Committee I would like to place on record are very sincere appreciation to all the Clubs for their support during what was a very difficult year.  We thank our many Sponsors for the various tournaments and their support for the sport of Golf in Fiji.  I make special mention of the following major sponsors: Digicel, Swire Shipping, Pernix (Fiji) Pte Ltd and Vukisch & Borich,
