Team Fiji Basketball Men's faith and believe played a huge part in their 51-47 gold medal win against a determined Team Guam looking for a three peat at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Fiji Basketball Captain Marques Whippy said they knew it was going to be hard going into the final against Guam but faith played a huge part in the teams win.

"We stayed positive, trusted in God and this was the outcome," he said.

Marques said they treated all their opponents as equals and were not deterred by labels like favourites or underdogs.

"We wanted to come out aggressive and throw the first punch but really it was our defence that won us the tournament here," he said.

Marques said the last time they won gold was at the 2007 Pacific Games when he was still playing with current national Coach Laisiasa Puamau.

"He called me up and said one last time to try and lead a young team and to build on what will be the future of the sport," he said.

Marques dedicated the win to the wives and partners of the players who have sacrificed time together so that the team could achieve a gold medal.

"It's hard leaving behind our wives and children to pursue this dream and we are grateful for their support.

"I also dedicate this win to my uncle Michael Whippy who passed away and to all those that have supported the team here in the Solomons and back home," he said.
