FASANOC, the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, is eagerly preparing to celebrate Olympic Day on Saturday, June 24, 2023. The festivities will take place Albert Park in Suva and the CAAF Compound in Nadi, embracing the spirit of the Olympic Games.
This year’s theme, "Let's Move” aims to inspire young people to lead active lifestyles and engage in physical activity. It is a global initiative that encourages individuals to prioritize their well-being through movement.
Research shows that the younger generation is becoming less active, with over 80% of young people unable to meet the recommended daily activity levels for optimal mental and physical health. FASANOC, as part of the National Olympic Movement, aims to address this issue and seeks the support of the public in spreading the message of leading an active lifestyle to younger generations.
To further promote this message, FASANOC, is organizing a Come-Try-Me sports fair where everyone will have the opportunity to try their hand at Archery, Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Judo, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and traditional games organized by physical education students and staff from the University of the South Pacific.
The event aims to bring together parents and children from different backgrounds to enjoy and engage in sports that may be new to them.
There will also be a Boot Camp session at the start of the event run by Australian Defense Forces.
Additionally, Team Fiji athletes and officials, to the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago and the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, are expected to attend the event.
Vanessa Kilner, CEO of FASANOC, expressed the importance of Olympic Day, as it provides an opportunity to share the Olympic ideals with the community in person.
Kilner hopes that the sports fair on Saturday will ignite a passion in athletes and their families to pursue their own Olympic dreams, thus keeping the Olympic spirit alive.
Olympic Day was established in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894, at the Sorbonne in Paris. Its purpose is to promote participation in sports worldwide, irrespective of age, gender, or athletic ability. National Olympic Committees organize various sports, cultural, and educational activities based on the pillars of "move," "learn," and "discover" to celebrate this special day.
