The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) is encouraging National Federations to utilise funding opportunities that are currently available through several internationally recognised institutions, as well as through a Fiji National Sports Commission grant being managed by FASANOC.
FASANOC Chief Executive Officer Lorraine Mar said “funds are available for Team Preparation for the upcoming Pacific Mini and Commonwealth Games, as well as for coaching courses through the IOC Olympic Solidarity programs.
As much as team preparation funds are important, so is upskilling of coaches to develop sports further at both the elite and grassroots levels. Whilst I appreciate the situation we are in currently, this is a good opportunity to upskill coaches and athletes provided we keep within Covid-19 protocols," she said.
Funding opportunities for National Federations include a competitive grant which is now available through the Australian Government's DFATPacificAus Sports Program and the Commonwealth Women's Leadership Programme Scholarship.
"For the competitive grant, this will be an exciting opportunity to partner with an Australian Sports Organisation to create opportunities for talented Fiji athletes to access high performance coaching, competitions and facilities," Ms Mar said.
"We encourage the National Federations to take up this opportunity for high performance support with the view of more athletes qualifying on merit for regional and international events, which is a strategic priority for FASANOC's" she said.
PacificAus Sports is welcoming applications from Pacific and Australian sports organisations working in partnership to create opportunities for talented Pacific athletes and teams to access high performance coaching, competitions and facilities with funding up to AUD 80,000.
To be eligible for a PacificAus Sports Grant, applicants must be an Australian or Pacific sport organisation.
For the PacificAus Sports program, applicants should have experience delivering high level training or competitions and must also have an existing relationship(s) with, or the support of, an Australian or Pacific partner sports organisation, as appropriate.
More information can be found on www.pacificaussports.gov.au with applications closing on 18th February, 2022.
"FASANOC is also pleased to forward information from Commonwealth Sport on the launch of the Commonwealth Women’s Leadership Programme," said Ms Mar.
"The programme will provide women-in-sport access to the Commonwealth Games, education and networking opportunities.
"This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and the Commonwealth Sport Charter’s commitment to Gender Equality and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," she said.
Ms Mar said the aim was to support women in sport on their personal development pathways and empower them to become leaders within their sport and communities.
She said there were 20 spots available for Commonwealth countries and the closing date for applications is 5th February 2022.
An application form can be found on www.fasanoc.org.fj that will need to be submitted to Hartwell Mhunduru - H.Mhunduru@thecgf.com and copied to FASANOC for information.
Ms Mar said FASANOC is able to provide support letters to eligible women in sport who are interested in applying.
Commonwealth Games sports also have access to a Commonwealth Sport Development Grant program specifically for Birmingham 2022 preparations which has a particular focus on assisting athletes with disabilities towards classification and qualification for the Games.
Meanwhile Team Fiji continues its preparations for the Pacific Mini Games which will be held in Saipan, Northern Marianas from July 17th and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England which will begin on July 28th, 2022
