With the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa just around the corner, Badminton will need to think strategically when picking their final team as injuries is one of the main concerns.
This came about after Badminton finished their competitions during the Fiji Games which was also their platform for selecting the final team to represent Fiji at the Pacific Games.
Badminton Coach Brent Munday said their one week long competition in Samoa will be intense and they need to ensure they are putting together the best team as possible.
“There are a couple of injuries with some of the players and that puts some question marks over our heads,” Munday said.
“When the smoke clears tomorrow, that will be the main thing we look at when putting our team together to make sure we have a fully fit team because it is a long tournament in Samoa with the teams and individuals events.
“Usually our females are our strong point and are our medal chances but with Andra’s injury currently, that has made things a bit difficult and we are trying to working around that.
“We have had Burty Molia and Ryan Fong back, they have been a part of Badminton in Fiji for such a long time and to see them come out and play the way they did today, is fantastic.”
With the Fiji Games now done and dusted, Munday said everyone will need to go back to the drawing board to pick their final team for the Pacific Games.
“The Fiji Games has made things a bit interesting as far as our selection,” he said.
“We need to sit back and see where our target medals will be and sort of adjust our team based around that.
“There is a few with injury question marks at the moment, so after today we will see how they pull up tomorrow and get a bit of a feedback from the physio’s as to how bad the injuries are.
“We are looking forward to what we can put together for the Games when we announce the team on Monday.”
